Maple-Pile Seating Series

Exploring Movement Through Repetition of Form

“There is emotional stability in a repeating module that moves through space and creates an endless pattern,” describes Maple-Pile’s designer, Larry Kornegay. Kornegay’s concept is realized in the repetitive pattern of the Maple-Pile Seating Series, which includes a long-form bench and short-form seat or side table. The Maple-Pile Seating Series is constructed from thermally-modified, FSC-certified red maple with a powder-coated steel frame and legs. Kornegay chose this wood for its excellent dimensional stability, sustainability, surface quality and value. It is also highly resistant to insects through a chemical-free treatment process. “Think of wood that is prematurely petrified; it is harder, more stable and water repellant,” Kornegay adds. Applicable for exterior and interior spaces, the Maple-Pile Seating Series is equally suitable for sculpture gardens or museum galleries.

A Cord of Maple, Cut and Split

Larry Kornegay encountered his inspiration for the Maple-Pile Seating Series in seeing stacks of firewood carefully arranged to dry. “When you stack rectangular pieces of wood in alternating directions, you get this permeable quality. It’s almost like the structure breathes,” describes Kornegay. “So this is what I set out to achieve in Maple-Pile—you can see right through the bench both from the top and the side. It’s simultaneously light and airy, grounded and substantial.”
